If you are thinking about getting a dachshunds then this is some basic information that you need to consider.

If you want a dog who...
• Comes in a variety of sizes - Standard & Miniature (all smallish)
• Comes in a variety of coat types and colors
• Is comical and entertaining
• Doesn't need a lot of outdoor exercise
• Makes a keen watchdog
• Is sociable with other family pets, especially other Dachshunds
• Usually lives a long life
A Dachshund may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...
• Suspiciousness or sharpness toward strangers when not socialized enough
• Potential scrappiness toward strange dogs (especially larger dogs)
• Stubbornness
• Notorious housebreaking difficulties (although it can be done)
• Digging holes
• Barking
• A mild doggy odor
• Worries about serious spinal problems that afflict 1 out of every 4 Dachshunds
A Dachshund may not be right for you.

Life expectancy: up to 16 years
Coat types: Longhaired, Smooth & Wire
Exercise needs Two or three walks totaling 30-45 minutes per day
Temperament moderate to high energy level. Clever, lively, courageous, bold. Independent and stubborn. Quite barky. Makes an excellent watchdog. Reserved with strangers.
Children & Other pets: Good with other pets and older, considerate children.

Dachshund puppies can cost between £500-£1000 each depending on area. If you find any cheaper then I would question where they are coming from as dachshunds are know to be bred by "puppy farms" for the pet trade.

If you are sure that you want a dachshund then try and find a local breeder who should be willing to have chat with you and answer any questions about the breed. There are a few listed on my links page.

Standard vs Miniature

Dachshunds are available in 2 sizes - standard & miniature. The picture on the left shows the size different, the standard being the bigger of the two.

Standard: Height 8-11 inches (20-27cm.); Weight- over 11 pounds (4.9kg.) at the age of 12 months

Miniature: Height up to 5-7 inches (13-18 cm.); Weight 11 pounds (4.9kg.) or less at the age of 12 months

Coat style

There are 3 coat types - Wire, smooth & long (Left to right in the picture)

WIRES - With their scruffy little face and their outgoing temperament that borders on clownish at times, these little guys will quickly worm their way into anyone’s heart. While grooming of this type of Dachshund requires less maintenance than their long-haired counterpart, a trip to the groomers will probably be necessary a couple of times each year to keep their beard and eyebrows looking their doggy finest.

SMOOTHS - This is by far the most popular and common type of Dachshund, with a smooth, sleek coat and long floppy ears. This dog has a reputation for being the most loyal to his owner, although he can also be more standoffish with strangers than the other two. The short coat of this dog might deceive you into thinking that grooming is unnecessary. The truth is that this dog will need to be brushed just like the other two Dachshund types, although probably not as often. This type of Dachshund probably sports the greatest color possibilities, since many patterns are available as well as shades.

LONGS have a reputation for being the calmest of the breed. Because of the long, silky hair on this dog, they will require a significant amount of grooming between brushing and bathing to keep her lovely coat looking its best.

Colours
There are quite a few colours and markings available in both standard & miniatures. Some are regonised by clubs and some aren't. I have been told that certain markings do cause health problems (double dapples as an example) but this is something that I recommend you research for yourselves.
